The Ollistrand K8 is a single-dose grinder with 54 mm flat burrs, made for people who weigh their beans before every brew and like to switch between coffees during the day. Instead of a large hopper, it has a small loading funnel: you pour in today's dose, grind it, and nothing is left sitting in the machine to go stale.
Adjustment is stepless. A wide dial with a fine scale turns the lower burr carrier, so you can make very small changes when a pour-over runs too fast or an espresso shot pulls too slowly. The dial has a locking screw that holds the setting once you have found it, which is useful if more than one person uses the grinder.
Flat burrs give a narrow particle range, which many people find brings out clearer flavor in light roasts. The K8 runs them at 600 rpm with a speed controller that keeps the motor steady when the beans first hit the burrs. Grinding 18 g for a filter brew takes about twelve seconds.
The grounds cup attaches with magnets, so it sits in exactly the right place and comes off with one hand. A plasma-treated chute reduces static, which keeps fine particles from clinging to the cup and the counter. The funnel and cup are dishwasher safe; the burrs come out with two thumb screws.
Because the K8 holds no beans between uses, it works well for people who keep two or three bags open at once, such as a dark roast for milk drinks and a light roast for filter. Switching coffees takes no purging and wastes no beans.
The housing is black anodized aluminium with an oak dial. Each K8 ships with a dosing tray, a cleaning brush, a set of spare thumb screws and a two-year workshop warranty.
